Sunny Today-Winter Returns Tomorrow

Posted: Updated:

Clear and cold across Acadiana as we start a new week. Hopefully you are one of the lucky who have a three day weekend! Most areas are at or just below the freezing point today, but a nice (brief) warm up is in store. Expect sunshine today with afternoon temperatures pushing well into the 50s. A few areas may hit 60 before the day is over.

Cold air is poised to push southward into the region starting tomorrow. Overnight temperatures should stay just above freezing, but that's where we'll start Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to run in the upper 30s and eventually fall into the lower 30s by the afternoon. This next system will bring precipitation. As on now, it appears rain will move into the area, with areas of freezing rain over areas along and north of US 190. Precipitation will likely begin over northern Louisiana during the early part of the morning, drifting into Central Louisiana late in the morning. Some travel problems are expected, and some advisories will likely be posted later today. As the colder air slides southward, some light freezing rain could be possible along the I-10 corridor later in the afternoon. The area of precipitation is expected to shrink as the colder air sinks southward.

Most models are in agreement with winter precipitation likely over northern Louisiana, with freezing rain changing to snow. Here in Acadiana, the models indicate this area of precipitation will be impacted by drier air, and will eventually fizzle out toward the coast with just a few flurries. Stay up to date on the latest forecasts, especially if you are traveling.

Very cold air will push in overnight Tuesday. We're expecting a hard freeze over all areas. Lows will dip to near 20 over central Louisiana, lower 20s along I-10, and low to mid 20s toward the coast. With freezing temperatures expected to last over 12 hours in some cases, pets, plants AND PIPES will need to be addressed. It stays cold Wednesday with another hard freeze Wednesday night. Warmer temperatures are expected toward the end of the week with anther chance for rain by the weekend.
