Light freeze Sat. AM then sunny and cool this weekend

Posted: Updated:

Now that skies have cleared across Acadiana temperatures will really cool off tonight with lows Saturday morning dropping into the mid to upper 20s.

With the winds remaining up this evening between 7-12 mph I am only expecting a light freeze for Acadiana meaning you will need to protect sensitive plants and pets but your pipes should be fine.

Saturday afternoon will look nice with plenty of sunshine but don't let the sunshine fool you as it is still going to be rather chilly with highs only topping out in the mid 40s.

Also, winds will still be breezy out of the north at 10-15 mph Saturday afternoon making it feel even cooler as wind chills will not get out of the mid 30s so bundle up if you have to be outside.

Sunday morning winds will finally begin to let up allowing temperatures to bottom out in the low to mid 20s.

Thus a hard freeze is likely Sunday morning meaning pipes, plants and pets will all need to be protected.

Sunday will be another cool afternoon with highs staying in the mid 40s but with the winds letting up it will not feel as bad.

Monday morning temperatures will again drop below freezing but only a light freeze is expect with lows in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

We will have a brief warm up Monday afternoon as highs will push the mid to upper 50s thanks to winds shifting out of the east under partly cloudy skies.

Our next weather system arrives Tuesday as a cold front drops down into Acadiana.

This could be an interesting system as some very cold air will be moving down on the back side causing some of the precipitation to turn over to a wintry mix and snow.

This system is still several days out so a lot could still change but right now the models are coming into an agreement that Acadiana could start to see some light scattered showers during the late morning into the early afternoon on Tuesday.

Then Tuesday afternoon as the cold air moves over the region the showers could switch over to some sleet and freezing rain and then end with a few snow showers Tuesday evening.

At this time Acadiana could see some light accumulation, maybe up to an inch in spots on cars and roofs and in grassy areas.

As for the roads black ice and slick spots will be the biggest concern as once the rain and snow ends temperatures will drop into the lower 20s flash freezing the moisture on the roads so the commute Wednesday morning could be very interesting.

Following this system we will get another shot of arctic air with highs on Wednesday not getting out of the 30s.
