Vermilion Parish educators stand behind Deyshia Hargrave

Posted: Updated:

Vermilion Parish teachers and parents of students at Rene Rost are standing behind Deyshia Hargrave after her arrest at the Vermilion Parish School Board meeting on Monday night.

Vermilion Parish teachers and the Vermilion Association of educators met Tuesday evening to discuss the arrest and decide, as a whole, what they wanted to do moving forward. Over 100 people packed Black's Seafood in Abbeville.

Association president, Suzanne Breaux, believed the meeting was necessary to give everyone room to fully express themselves.

"We had an open forum where there was questions and answers. We(the board) did speak a little bit because we wanted to get a feel for what the teachers across the district were feeling and how they wanted to move forward. We wanted to keep it positive. So we decided upon a rally for this Thursday to support Deyshia and her first amendment right and that we will not be silent," Breaux said.

Teachers from Hargraves school, and parents in the district say they stand with the educators to support Hargrave 100%.

One parent expressed, "If you cannot back your teachers as board members of the school, it's pitiful. This is really a pitiful, pitiful situation."

Rene Rost teacher, Polly Marceaux, said she has never seen so many teachers hurt like she did on Tuesday.

"What tore me apart is when I got on my Rene Rost campus at noon and saw all of my fellow teachers so very upset to the point where they wanted to not be at school at all," Marceaux said.

On Thursday, the association is inviting educators and the community out to stand in solidarity with Deyshia Hargrave. There will be a rally at 4 p.m. In Magdalen square in Abbeville.

Hargrave no stranger to fighting for teachers and education. Watch the video below:
