Without working water after freezing weather, Baldwin works to resolve the issue

Posted: Updated:

The town of Baldwin is without water until 5 a.m. Thursday, and the water will be shut off again at 8 a.m. if the pressure is still too low.

Some residents are concerned for their safety. Wednesday night makes the second night in a row with no water.

"It's kind of inconvenient, but it's mother nature," one resident said.

The city placed a 35,000-gallon water tub outside of the fire station for residents to get water for bathroom purposes.

The town called an emergency meeting to address the water crisis, questioning why the water district shut off the water supply in Baldwin but not the surrounding areas.

City Attorney Joseph Tabb said he doesn't understand why Baldwin had to be sacrificed.

"Whether we invested in the building of the water plant or not, I do not think we should be shut off like the red-headed step child," Tabb said.

Several residents said they have elderly family members in their home, and children with special needs, and they want answers as to when they can expect consistent water flow.

Paul Naquin, who is a member at large of the St. Mary Parish Council, has stepped in to help with the situation. Naquin is also a resident of Baldwin.

"If we get a fire tonight or my house catches on fire, they're going to take three times longer to get to my house. They have to come from Charenton, Franklin, and Four Corners. If they had water, the Baldwin Fire Department would be there within minutes," Naquin said.

The mayor is asking for residents to be patient as she and her council work to get the issues with the district resolved.

"We are working with the district. Tomorrow morning the water will come back on from 5 to 8. After that, we really don't know. We are just going to go step by step, one day at a time to see what it is going to be," Lanceslin said,
