Freezing at night, but temperatures moderating

Posted: Updated:

While another hard freeze is expected for Acadiana tonight, temperatures will begin a slow moderating trend into the weekend.

Look for lows to drop into the low-mid 20s by morning, but lots of sunshine will bring our temperatures into the mid-upper 40s Thursday afternoon.

Another sub-freezing night can be expected Thursday night into Friday morning with readings closer to the mid-upper 20s thanks to some high clouds helping to keep our temperatures from getting too low.

Fair skies with temperatures near 50 are expected Friday.

This weekend will be even milder with highs reaching the mid-upper 50s under mostly sunny skies Saturday.

Readings will push into the low-mid 60s Sunday despite increasing cloud cover. A few showers may be possible by late Sunday afternoon.

A good chance of rain and some embedded thunderstorms will be possible Sunday night into early Monday with our next cool front.

This front however, will not be nearly as cold as this recent arctic blast.

Finally, after crunching the numbers, Lafayette's temperatures for 2017 were warmest in the 124 record dating back to 1893, and only to surpass 2016 as the warmest year on record.

In fact, four of the last six years are in the seven warmest years on record...the definitive warming trend continues.

While we measure year long temperatures by the "mean" or average of all highs and lows together, the most notable trend continues to be the warming of our overnight lows...which pushed the mean temperatures to record levels over the last two years.

The numbers for 2016 and 2017 might have been even warmer, if it weren't for the two rather very wet years.

Here are the top 10 warmest years:
