Leger named assistant coach for UL

Posted: Updated:

Louisiana football head coach Billy Napier has announced the hire of Tim Leger as an assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator.

Leger will coach the wide receivers for the Ragin' Cajuns.

"Tim Leger is a terrific coach and recruiter," Napier said. "He will bring great experience and wisdom relative to our recruiting footprint and strategy. In my short time around Tim, his ability to teach and attention to detail were elite. He will be a great addition to our staff. It's awesome to reunite he and his wife Ashley with their son Gunner."

Leger served as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at ULM from 2016-17. The Warhawks ranked third in the Sun Belt in receiving yards in 2017 averaging 288.8 yards per game while posting 33.9 points per game.

Under Leger, All-Sun Belt standout RJ Turner finished the 2017 season among the best in the league in both receiving yards (693) and touchdowns (6).

Prior to ULM, Leger spent nine seasons as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at McNeese from 2007-15.

In 2015, the Cowboys offense averaged just under 400 yards per contest while scoring 30.2 points per game as seven offensive players earned All-Southland Conference honors and three earned All-Louisiana honors that season.

During his tenure in McNeese he coached a pair of Southland Conference award winners. In 2009, he tutored Derrick Fourroux was the league's Player of the Year and in 2014, Cody Stroud, who broke several school records, was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year.

Leger began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at McNeese State in 1999 and served as a graduate assistant during the 2000 season. He then joined the staff at St. Thomas More High School where he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2001-06. During his time at St. Thomas More, the squad won six district titles and reached the state semifinals four times.

Leger was drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1992 MLB First Year Player Draft and he played three seasons in the Pirate organization. After his baseball career ended, he began his collegiate football career as a quarterback at McNeese State.

He was four-year letterwinner for the Cowboys from 1995-98, Leger was an All-Southland Conference quarterback in 1996 after leading the conference in passing and setting the school record for total offense per game. He played on league championship teams in 1995 and 1997 and the 1997 squad advanced to the FCS National Championship game.

Leger is married to the former Ashley Hebert and the couple have one son, Gunner, who is an All-American on the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team becoming the first player in school history to be named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.

Leger's hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
