New state law requires traffic stop etiquette for new drivers

Posted: Updated:

More than 20 new state laws are now in effect. One of those new laws hopes to ease tensions between drivers and police officers during traffic stops.
The state now requires driving schools to give lessons on driver conduct in a traffic stop.

"That's really important, especially with what's been going on with police brutality," student Krista Wilson said.

Wilson says the lessons are needed, especially for her peers.

"I feel like a lot of people when they see a cop walking to their car, their immediate reaction is 'oh I have to be defensive. I have to defend myself. I shouldn't be respectful. I have to be disrespectful , but it's not always that way with a cop," Wilson said.

While the law requiring the curriculum is new, Southwest Safety owner Dayne Huval says he and other instructors were already teaching it.

"All of this of course is in response to all the police shootings that have been around," Huval said.
"When you get pulled over by a police officer be courteous and respectful. Make sure you have your documents in order."

Huval adds if you have a gun in your car, tell the officer immediately. As for Wilson, she's waiting for the day she can get her license and get on the road.

"I just hope to be the safest driver that I can," Wilson said. "I want to make sure that everybody in the car with me and everybody outside of the car is safe, especially when I'm on the road. Nobody wants to lose a life in a car."

Another law affecting drivers ed courses takes effect in February . Driving students will need to get a temporary drivers permit from the DMV before they can take any classes.

"They must obtain one of these temporary permits from the Office of Motor Vehicles before they show up and sit in the classroom for drivers education," Huval said. " Once they finish drivers education, then they can change that temporary permit to a permit where they can drive with parents. "
