Iberia water customers facing issues due to freezing weather

Posted: Updated:

In Coteau, a boil water advisory has been issued in Iberia Parish due to critically low levels in the water supply.

All Waterworks District 3 Coteau should boil water for one full minute until further notice. Water levels in the system overwhelmed the pumps and caused the issue customers faced Tuesday evening. Water storage, according to officials was being depleted.

Officials say faucets running overnight are putting an extreme demand on the water system and its ability to provide potable water to the service area. The water was shut off to customers at around 5:30 Tuesday evening and water returned at around 10:30 p.m. The system recovered for about three hours and is now working at a reduced efficiency.

This district's service area is generally described as the area West of Old Spanish Trail, South of Captain Cade Road, North of Jefferson Island Road, and East of Guillotte Road.

In New Iberia and Loreauville,

The Louisiana Water Company in New Iberia says that low water pressure is causing issues for the system.

Customers are being asked to reduce the rate of flow of dripping water and or drip pipes on an intermittent basis. The company says that the last 24 hours has seen a large demand on the water system which has lowered the capacity of the water treatment plant, water storage facilities and pumping systems that keep and maintain operating pressures.

"Customers need to make every effort to conserve or restrict water use. Using water on an "as needed" basis for the next 24 hours will greatly assist the water company to replenish water storage facilities and return the water system to normal operating pressures,"  LAWCO states.

LAWCO is also asking customers with broken or damaged waterlines to shut off their water valve as soon as possible and repair the leaking pipes to avoid any unnecessary waste of water and even greater demands on the water system which could adversely affect our community water system.

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact the LAWCO customer service office at 337-365-0002.
