Young teen arrested in Family Dollar fire

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with yesterday's fire at the Patterson Family Dollar Store.

A spokesman for the state Fire Marshal's Office said the boy was booked with aggravated arson.

He's accused of setting a fire while shopping inside the store Monday afternoon, the spokesman said. No one was injured, he said. 

The store was heavily damaged by smoke and water, and the HVAC system was heavily damaged by fire. The store's front windows were broken by firefighters fighting the blaze, he said. 

Initially, firefighters suspected the fire began in the heating system, but Fire Marshal investigators gathered evidence that indicated arson.

Some arsonists take advantage of cold snaps, because so many accidental fires are started by heaters, the spokesman said.
