Rayne family loses home in New Year's Day fire

Posted: Updated:
RAYNE, La. -

In Rayne, firefighters are investigating a fire that destroyed a home in the 400 block of Holt Avenue. The home's owner says he and his family are devastated by the loss.

"Right now, I don't know what I'm going to do. It's just hard, man," said homeowner David Meche.

For the Meche family, the new year has already taken a difficult turn after falling victim to the afternoon residential fire.

"Me and my family just got through cooking in the kitchen. We sat down, started fixing our plates, started eating our New Year dinner. After getting through eating, my wife said, 'Let me go check on the clothes in the laundry room,'" said Meche.

And that is when they discovered the fire and realized it was time to get out.

"I couldn't do anything, man, couldn't do anything. And I tried, and all I did was focus on my family and make sure they were all okay," said the homeowner.

Meche, his wife and 8-year-old daughter were all home. They are all okay, but the daughter lost all her Christmas presents and her pet.

"She lost her cat. We got our dog out, but it took over so fast and the wind blowing... That's why they're telling me they're having a lot of problems," Meche said.

And now the place Meche has called home for more than two decades is gone.

"Man, I've been here over 20 years, over 20 years. Just trying to provide for my family and something like this just came along and took everything away," said Meche.

If you would like to help the family, you can donate money under "David Meche" at Rayne State Bank.
