The Baton Rouge Police Department says that a man in a wheelchair was struck and killed on Essen Lane at around 6:00 pm on New Year's Eve in Baton Rouge.

An investigation by the police department revealed that a 2010 Honda Accord traveling north on Essen Lane struck a pedestrian in a wheelchair while he was attempting to cross the roadway. Police say that 61-year-old Clay Barras was not in a crosswalk or an intersection at the time of the incident.

Barras was taken to a Baton Rouge hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Honda was not injured, according to police.

Police say that impairment is not believed to be a factor in this incident. An investigation is ongoing, but police do not anticipate any charges against the driver.
