Improvements to Lafayette Parish drainage on the way in 2018

Posted: Updated:

We're only a few days away until the New Year and plans to improve Lafayette Parish are in the works.

Improvements to drainage in Lafayette Parish are on the way in 2018. This year, voters approved the re-dedication tax of public health funds for drainage improvements.

"A big piece of 2017 was trying to come up with a solution to start working towards improving the drainage situation," Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux said.

"2018 is going to be actually taking that money and putting it into work."

About 11.5 million dollars will go towards drainage.

"In early 2018, we're going to release a list of the results of a technical analysis from our public work engineers on which ditches and coulées need to be cleared out and what will be the most impact for the number of folks," Robideaux said.

$500,000 will also go towards a new initiative, called CREATE. It focuses on culture and tourism. Robideaux says they're creating plans and strategies for the initiative to help the economy.

Another new project to come is the 311 initiative. Robideaux explained that it's a way for residents to call with concerns

"We want it to be an information hotline for folks to remember to call without having to memorize all the numbers for planning, zoning, and departments like parks and rec."
