Sun Returns Friday-Extreme Cold Next Week

Posted: Updated:

Light rain and drizzle will continue for a few hours this morning, and northern areas of Acadiana are getting closer to the freezing point. Since the air aloft is somewhat warmer than here on the ground, the precipitation will continue as rain, but could freeze on contact with surfaces in areas below 32. So some freezing rain is possible for a few hours along and north of US 190. The rains will be very light, and only minor accumulation of ice is possible on bridges and overpasses. Conditions should improve by mid morning with rain ending and temperatures climbing above freezing in all areas.

Unfortunately, it won't be getting much warmer today as highs will struggle into the low to mid 40s. Clouds should hang on most of the day with a few areas of clearing this afternoon over the northern sections. I-10 and southward to the coast should remain at least mostly cloudy for the rest of the day. Skies will clear overnight tonight with temperatures dropping to the lower 30s. Freezing temperatures are likely from I-10 northward.

Sunny skies return for Friday, but temperatures will remain below normal. Expect highs to reach the mid 50s. Friday night will be clear and chilly as lows dip to near 40 degrees. Saturday, expect clouds to return with highs approaching 60 degrees. Rain will return New Year's Eve with highs in the mid 50s again. A strong cold front will push through Sunday night as the rains end. Lows will drop into the upper 20s with wind chill readings in the teens.

Arctic air will hold on to us most of next week with significant freezes for several nights. Pets, plants AND pipes will need to be protected as temperatures are expected to drop into the low to mid 20s over all areas Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings. Preparations should be completed sometime today through Saturday in order to avoid rain and the extreme cold. There's some uncertainty about Tuesday with some models indicating some winter precip along the Gulf Coast. Stay tuned.
