Son carries on father's holiday tradition in St. Martin Parish

CADE, La. -

A St. Martinville man is carrying on the legacy of his father by giving nursing home residents food before Christmas.

John Calvin Smith, Sr. set up the donations the past 25 years until recently when he died after a long battle with cancer.

His son, Maurice, is now carrying on the torch-- arriving at the Landmark of Acadiana in Cade with individual bags of fruit.

Maurice passed the food out with the help of volunteers and the St. Martinville High School girls basketball team.

"I feel that it's something he would've continued if sickness hadn't have taken him. And, I feel I'm obligated to do this: following my father's footsteps. There's a lot of people out there, especially the elderly, that need to know that there's still someone that cares for them," said Maurice.
