Local barber, veteran, gives free haircuts to kids

Posted: Updated:

For years, Hamilton Ledet Jr. served his country in the U.S. Army - including two tours in Iraq.

He's retired from the military now, but he hasn't given up giving back.

Today, he was giving free haircuts to students at the Early Learning Center in St. Martinville. He's been giving free cuts to kids for several years now, around the various holidays.

"I feel that a lot of these kids out here could just use a little something, over the top, extra, and I just want to go that extra mile and make them smile for the holidays," he said. "I'm truly blessed in life, and I want to give back."

The kids seem to enjoy the experience, for at least two reasons, he says.

"They love all the attention, and I cut them how they want," he said. "Some of them want designer cuts, specialty cuts, their brother's cut, I try to cut it the way they want."

Ledet predicted he do about 30 free cuts today for the children at the school - and said he'd be back next year, too.
