The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Department has released a Fireworks Ordinance for the parish effective from December 15th until January 1st for the unincorporated areas of the parish.

The department says that fireworks may be set off from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm during the scheduled ordinance days. Additional hours from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am will be added to both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Many cities or towns within the parish do not allow for fireworks. If you live in city or town limits within the parish of St. Mary, including Morgan City, Berwick, Patterson, and Franklin,  official town ordinances will apply.

As a reminder, fireworks are not allowed within 1,000 feet of churches, hospitals, schools, public buildings, or fireworks retail locations.

The department has provided tips to enjoy fireworks responsibly:

  • Find a clear area away from buildings and vehicles
  • Designate a responsible adult
  • Never give fireworks to kids
  • Don't drink alcohol
  • Read the labels
  • Only use fireworks in the way they were intended
  • Have water/fire extinguishers ready to go
  • Wear safety glasses
  • Never relight a dud. Soak it in water.
