Comeback Cajuns Beat SLU Tuesday

LAFAYETTE – JaKeenan Gant recorded his second consecutive double-double, scoring a team-high 14 points with a career-best 12 rebounds, as he led six players in double figures and helped the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns rally from a 13-point first-half deficit to record an 82-74 win over Southeastern Louisiana in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Tuesday at the Cajundome.

Bryce Washington notched his 30th career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as Louisiana (10-2) won its seventh straight game and won 10 games in non-conference play for the second straight year. Frank Bartley added 13 points for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Malik Marquetti scoring 12, Marcus Stroman 11 and Johnathan Stove 10.

Louisiana trailed 27-14 with 8:22 remaining after Eddy Polanco scored on a layup for SLU (6-6) before the Ragin’ Cajuns closed out the half on a 17-2 run. Bartley started the run with four free throws before a dunk by Gant closed the gap to 27-20 at the 6:54 mark.

Washington, who finished 5-for-9 from the floor scored six straight points for Louisiana after Johnathan Stove drained his first 3-pointer of the season that cut the SLU lead to 27-25.

SLU took its final lead of the night – 39-38 – when Jordan Capps scored on a bucket in the lane with 16:23 remaining, but Gant scored the next five points to start a 12-2 run that gave Louisiana the lead for good, including a dunk with 15:33 left for a 43-39 lead.

A bucket by Stove and a 3-pointer by Bartley gave Louisiana a 59-48 lead with 9:30 remaining in the game before the Ragin’ Cajuns took their biggest lead of the night – 70-56 – on a Bartley layup with 5:15 left.

Louisiana overcame a slow start offensively in the first half, where it shot 11 of 32 from the floor (34.4 percent) and 4-for-17 from behind the 3-point line. The Ragin’ Cajuns rebounded in the second half shooting 17-for-31 (54.8 percent) from the floor and finished 28-for-63 (44.4 percent).

Washington tied a pair of season-highs for Louisiana, dishing out five assists and blocking a pair of shots in a season-high 35 minutes. Marquetti finished 5-for-10 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who outscored the Lions, 51-45, in the second half to pull away for the win.

Marlain Veal lead SLU with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds. Moses Greenwood came off the bench to score 14 points for the Lions with Capps scoring 12 and James Currington 11.

The Lions shot 17-for-25 (68.0 percent) in the second half and finished 28-for-54 (51.9 percent) for the game. Jabbar Singleton led SLU with four assists with Currington recording a career-high four steals.

Louisiana will close out its non-conference schedule on Friday (Dec. 22) when it faces ACC member Clemson (11-1) in a 2 p.m. CST contest at Littlejohn Coliseum.
