Iberia Parish sees spike in burglaries

New Iberia, La. -

Iberia Parish deputies are investigating a string of "smash and grab" burglaries which, they say, are on the rise this holiday season. Since Thanksgiving, Iberia Parish has seen more burglaries than there have been days.

"17 business burglaries 42 residential burglaries 25 car burglaries and we responded to 388 alarm activations," says Major Wendell Raborn with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.

Major Raborn with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office says the business burglaries have been problematic for a specific type of establishment while they're closed overnight.

"Convenience stores have been hit hard by these 'smash and grabs'. It's so easy for them. They throw a big brick through the window they're in and out in less than a minute most of the time. They're not looking to be confrontational with anybody. They want to get in and out, grab what they want," says Raborn.

Even with their own well being not at risk, business owners and clerks fell they're running out of options to keep their stores safe. The Sheriff's office has offered advice.

"We tell them to reinforce the points, their windows, their doors. There are bars, they could put grating on it," says Raborn.

But the owner of many Food-N-Fun stores says he doesn't want to bar his windows or get roll down doors because it would tarnish the image of the community, making it appear high-crime and unsafe.

The root of the problem, the Sheriff's Office believes, is a bunch of repeat offenders. If you know of or see any suspicious activity, contact the Sheriff's Office.
