Senior Spotlight 12/14: Erath's Payne Touchet

Posted: Updated:

Sometimes you pick your sport, other times the sport picks you. For Erath high's Payne Touchet, his friends picked soccer for him.

"I was completely lost,” said the senior defender Wednesday. “I remember they had to teach me to dribble the ball, I didn't even know how to properly kick it. I would kick it with my toe, which you're not supposed to do.”

When Payne joined the Erath soccer team as a sophomore, it was the first he played the sport in nearly 10 years.

"My friends actually talked me into playing. They said it was, I don't want to say less work than football, but it was a different element,” he added.

Like most things Payne does, he excelled on the pitch. The same goes for football and track.

“He sets his mind to it, and he accomplishes whatever his agenda is on,” said Erath Soccer coach Wayne Mouton. “He came in to play soccer three years ago. He wanted to learn the sport, wanted to play the sport. It took him awhile to learn what he was supposed to do, but he does well.

Between practices, Payne is the senior class president, carries a 4.0 GPA and has earned several academic awards. Payne says he is humble, more likely to stay quiet than talk about himself.

"I would say I’m a pretty smart guy,” Payne said. “I know, no matter how good I might feel or how smart I might think I am, in the grand scheme of things I’m not really anybody you know?... My dad would always say always do what's right, just and honorable, and I try to live by that.

Payne plans to attend the University of Louisiana and major in engineering.
