The inside scoop on a new Christmas tradition: Elf on a Shelf

Posted: Updated:

It's a way for Santa to keep an eye on every boy and girl without having to do the dirty work himself. And whether you love them or think they're a bit creepy, it looks like these little guys are here to stay.

In houses across Acadiana, there are little people stirring and we've got the inside scoop of all the "little" shenanigans from one of Santa's elves himself, Claude.

"We're all about having fun and bringing Christmas cheer to Acadiana," says Claude of he and his mischievous friends.

Years ago a new tradition started when little "Elf on the Shelf" started making appearances in homes across the world. Their job: to keep little boys and girls on their toes while waiting for Jolly Ole' Saint Nick.

Claude tells us that the job is his most important part of the year. "Every night we report to Santa. We give him the list of the good behavior and bad behavior. Then we report back to the house the next day to keep tabs on the family."

And he does admit that he and his friends can get a little mischievous at times

"Well, you know, we like to keep things fun. What we do, when the house is quiet and everyone is sleeping we find something that we can do to make the kids laugh or make mama surprised in the morning. We just want to give a good little laugh in the morning."

And for those little ones who may end up on the naughty list, Claude says not to fret. There's still time to make it right.

"Just because you were put on the naughty list for doing something a little naughty...doesn't mean that you're not going to get a gift...you have to make sure that you keep doing nice things and we'll move you from the naughty list to the nice list," says Claude.

Before he left us to get back to his holiday duties, Claude gave us some final words for all the children of Acadiana.

"Make sure to be nice, make sure to treat others with respect and make sure to keep a smile on your face. I'm watching and all of my friends are watching to report back to Santa."
