Rayne Police say a vehicle crossed the center line struck a Calcasieu Parish School bus Wednesday, causing congestion on I-10 West in Acadia Parish.

Police Chief Carroll Stelly says the bus was returning from a field trip when the crash occurred on I-10 westbound at mile marker 91 in Rayne. The crash involved a car that was traveling eastbound, crossed the median. The driver's vehicle then struck a Calcasieu Parish School Bus which was traveling Westbound from Lafayette to Lake Charles.

The driver of that vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to a Lafayette hospital, the chief said. He is listed in critical condition.

Five children were on board at the time of the crash and they are being checked out for injuries. Chief Stelly says that all occupants were okay but have been transported to an area hospital, along with the driver, to be seen by a doctor to be sure. Students on this bus were from Barbe High School.

At about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, Stelly said his investigators were doing measurements and so the right lane of the highway was blocked. The congestion was cleared later Wednesday evening.
