The co-chairman of a campaign to recall embattled Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope was arrested yesterday — the day the recall failed — by Pope's employees, and on a 20-year-old misdemeanor warrant.

Steven Wilkerson of Lafayette was booked on a warrant accusing him of issuing four worthless checks to four different businesses — two of them to businesses that no longer exist — over a one-month period in January and February 1997, according to Wilkerson's arrest affidavit. The checks totaled less than $200.

"I can only speculate as to why this happened yesterday," Wilkerson said. "I know our campaign ended yesterday. Perhaps the Marshal's Office felt a little bolder."

Wilkerson spoke to the media outside Pope's office on Tuesday afternoon. He said he has a court date in January and plans to make full restitution once he receives record of the checks.

Wilkerson helped organize an effort to recall Pope, who faces a seven-count felony indictment on counts of perjury and malfeasance in office. He's accused of lying under oath in a public records lawsuit and of misusing public funds, both for political purposes and to pay lawyers in his criminal defense.

Wilkerson said the recall campaign may be over, but the committee's efforts are not.

"We're going to continue to fight, and continue to make sure Brian Pope receives the justice he deserves," he said.

Wilkerson, who says he's a military and law enforcement veteran, said it's just "the right thing to do."

"We're going to continue to expose the wrong-doings he's done and continue to try to elevate Lafayette to the city it's supposed to be," Wilkerson said. "I'm disappointed in Marshal Pope's behavior, although I'm not surprised.

"This seems to be in line with the shady behavior he's known for."
