On Saturday night, Acadia Parish deputies say they responded to a "suspicious circumstance" at a convenience store located in Duson.

Just before 9:00 pm, deputies spoke with an employee of the store who told them that a man was inside a bathroom stall in the men's restroom and had been there for a long period of time. Sheriff KP Gibson says that subject had apparently been in the stall for several hours. Employees told deputies that when they checked on the subject he told them he was sick. Sheriff Gibson says that employees were concerned that the subject may have been planning to rob the business.

Deputies entered the restroom and began speaking to the man keeping their distance. During a short conversation with the individual, the subject told deputies they would have to shoot him. Deputies say that after approximately 10-15 minutes of speaking with the individual, he shot himself in the bathroom stall.

Gary Francis Perkins, 52 of Kokomo, Indiana was identified as the individual. He died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Perkins was wanted in the state of Indiana for rape and other charges. Acadia Parish Deputies are working with law enforcement personnel in Indiana as part of this investigation.
