Spirit of Acadiana: The Nutcracker

Posted: Updated:

The Lafayette Ballet Theater will present The Nutcracker this weekend. Performances begin this Saturday at 7:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm at the Heymann Performing Arts Center in Lafayette.

Spirit of Acadiana was live this morning at the New Lafayette Ballet Theater Studio on Petroleum Drive in Lafayette where the ever-popular holiday show is rehearsed and perfected before the big performances at the Heymann Performing Arts Center.

KATC's Scott Brazda spoke with Geoff Gjertson, architect of the brand new rehearsal building for the Lafayette Ballet Theater. The building is designed with a floor as big as the stage at the Heymann Center and is about 6,000 sq ft. with two studios and importantly, enough parking for all of those talented dancers and their parents.

Scott also had the chance to speak with Shannon Heath, one of the women behind the production of one of Acadiana's most beloved holiday events. The Lafayette Ballet Theater has been 35 years in the making and its growth has afforded them to make their way to a brand new facility for students to strengthen their craft.

Long, late evenings and dark, early mornings are just a small part of the routines that dancers go through as Nutcracker week begins. This year marks the 17th annual Nutcracker performance for the Ballet Theater.

Guest artists from the Pacific Northwest Ballet will fly in to help with the performance preparation and rehearsals will continue for students until the very end of the week.

All tickets are currently available at the Heymann Performing Arts Center Box Office and at Ticketmaster.com.
