BERWICK, La. -

A mother bear and her cub wandered into a Berwick neighborhood on Saturday, where they spent hours in a pecan tree as residents looked on.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard said the two bears stayed in the tree behind a home on Ceylon Street until sundown. The bears then came down and were last seen entering a seawall gate on Second Street.  Richard was able to snap a couple of photos of the bears.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries were contacted and a representative was dispatched to monitor the situation until the two black bears were gone.

Black bear sightings are a very common occurrence in St. Mary Parish. Last year, residents in Patterson were advised to "bear-proof" their garbage cans or face fines after black bear activity in the area began to increase.
