Road to the Dome: Catholic New Iberia Seeks Revenge With Title on the Line

Posted: Updated:

A year ago both Catholic New Iberia and Notre Dame lost in the state semifinals, Thursday they'll meet in the dome for a state title.

When Catholic New Iberia takes the field in Division III title game they'll look to prove they're better than the September version of the Panthers who lost to Notre Dame 37-0.

The game is a rematch of the September 22 game in which the Panthers offense was on a chain. It was the team's only loss in 2017 this year, and was the only time the offense truly struggled. Catholic N.I. has scored 49 or more points in 9 of their 11 wins.

But it's not the offense that the Panthers expect to be the difference Thursday, it's their defense that's held opponents to eight or fewer points in six of their eight games since that September loss.

"We're a lot better defensively and more diverse offensively," said head coach Brent Indest. "We simplified ourselves offensively, more to the core of what we do. We have more diversity within that scheme. But defensively is where we've come the furthest. We had a lot of new starters, those guys have matured a lot and settled into what they're doing and they're executing to a high level."

"One thing that sticks out is how hard and tough they play," added senior running back Ben Landry.: It's a tough battle every time we play. When we go out there, we know it's going to be a dog fight."

Kickoff from the Superdome is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
