Headaches in Henderson due to construction off of I-10

Posted: Updated:
Henderson, La. -

The I-10 expansion project is making progress, but not everyone who lives along the interstate is happy about the construction.

The Henderson exit from I-10 is one big headache and a whole lot of hassle for drivers and nearby businesses.

Now that detour routes have shifted, things are even more confusing.

"We made a major change. What we did is, we shifted traffic over from LA 347 to an alternate detour road that we've constructed," says Bill Oliver from DOTD.

"Its affecting everything, deli sales, gas prices, we're just losing business because it's hard to get in. This morning, I know it takes me normally five to seven minutes to get to work, but we were at a standstill and I left at eight and I didn't get here till about three minutes till nine," says Edona Borel, who works at the Henderson Travel Plaza along the interstate.

DOTD says the project, which is part of the I-10 widening, should take nine months to complete. They started in July, and right now they're on time.

State troopers are directing traffic along the new temporary route.

"They're there generally first thing in the morning around 6 o'clock and yesterday they were there until about 7 o'clock in the evening. They'll be there as long as the traffic's there so they're going to be there all day," says Oliver.

Residents say this isn't enough.

"They do need some lights or signs directing which way to go because at night we don't have a traffic guard, nobody directing the traffic at night, so at night they can't see," says Borel.

"We're always looking at that stuff, what we'll do is send our traffic people, we usually wait a few days, maybe a week or so to let traffic calm down, let people get used to it," says Oliver.

For now, DOTD recommends driving with caution and giving yourself extra time for your commute.
