Cold Weather Tips: Prepare your home during the holiday season

Posted: Updated:
LAFAYETTE -

The temperatures are about to match the Christmas decor in downtown Lafayette. Some Lafayette residents are anticipating the weather.

"It's time for some cold weather," Gene Meche said. "People enjoy the weather in south Louisiana because we don't get enough!"

Now with the first taste of winter there's some reminders. The Lafayette fire department responds to more fires this time of year.

"They put the space heater too close to a combustible," Alton Trahan with the Lafayette fire department said. "You want to give it (the space heater) at least 3 feet from any combustible that can catch on fire. "

Trahan says using extension cords is also a no when it comes to space heaters. He has some advice for the fireplaces too.

"Make sure the ashes are cool before you place them outside," Trahan said. "Often times they will put them in something plastic and that's how the fires start."

Fires aren't the only concern. Freezing temperatures can burst pipes.

"It's best to prepare in your warmer months," Grant Prudhomme of Pipes & Plugs LLC  said. "If your pipes aren't insulated, then you should probably do it now."

He added, "If you don't insulate the pipes, you can have water under the house. A lot of times when pipes burst, the water shoots up. The water can shoot up to the bottom of your floor and it can rot your floor."

Insulating pipes ahead of freezing temperatures can prevent that from happening. While the cold weather arrives in Acadiana residents like Meche say they're prepared for the frigid temps.

"We need some cold weather. When it's all over and done, we'll have some beautiful weather and enjoy," Meche said.
