An Opelousas man is dead following a car crash in Pointe Coupee Parish.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. today, Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on U.S. 190, west of Hwy. 413.

The crash took the life of 64-year-old Billy J. Bookman of Opelousas.

A spokesman with Troop A  says investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Bookman was traveling eastbound on U.S. 190. For reasons still under investigation, Bookman's car veered off the right side of the roadway and struck several trees.

Troopers say Bookman was not wearing a seatbelt during the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result.

Impairment is unknown at this time, but a toxicology sample was obtained from Bookman to be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
