Broussard Police arrested a 13-year-old Friday for bringing a gun to school.

A spokesman said school officials located a gun in a student's book sack during last hour classes.

The gun belonged to the student's mother, and she usually kept it in the glove compartment of her car. She told police she didn't know it was missing. No students were injured or threatened with the gun, but it did have one round in the magazine, police said.

Broussard Police says parents should try to check students book sacks to make sure they are bringing only school approved items to school with them.

"We strive to keep our students safe and we will do everything we can to make sure they are, but we are asking parents to help do their part as well," Chief Brannon Decou said.
