A New Iberia woman has been arrested and accused of stealing mail from Vermilion Parish mailboxes.

Chasity Sturm, 33, was booked with 10 counts of theft and unauthorized use of an access card, said Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon.

Detectives used video surveillance and evidence gathered during an investigation of a stolen access card to tie the crimes to a white, four-door vehicle and a woman who was stealing mail.

She apparently would steal mail from one mailbox and place it in other mailboxes to cover up the thefts, the sheriff said.

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives also assisted in the investigation, the sheriff said.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated from Vermilion Parish and the Broussard Police Department.  The investigation will also be forwarded to the US Postal Inspectors Office for a Federal Investigation, the sheriff said.

The sheriff said he would like to thank the residents of Vermilion Parish for being aware of what is going on in their neighborhoods and added that when reporting suspicious activity to Law Enforcement in a timely manner it is often a key component in solving these types of crimes.
