Unexploded military ordnance found in Youngsville drug bust

Posted: Updated:

The scene is now clear and at least one person is under arrest after SWAT teams and military personnel swarmed a home on the 400 block of Gallet Road in Youngsville.

Early Wednesday morning, a drug raid at the home turned up something else.

"They were able to identify that the unexploded ordnance was a military projectile known as an M-7 and it is a training rocket," says John Mowell from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.

The M-7 is a practice bazooka rocket dating back to World War II. Deputies say there were no explosives in that rocket, but that didn't stop them from taking precautions after finding it.

"The Sheriff's Office SWAT team cleared the residence, we have obtained three people, the search warrant was obtained by the metro narcotics task force," says Mowell.

Neighbors tell us the raid didn't surprise them. They say that same house was involved in a methamphetamine bust in recent years, and that they've seen suspicious activity at the house.

While the drug investigation continues, officials say they've destroyed the rocket.
