A Thibodaux man is accused of shooting and killing a woman Friday morning and trying to burn her body, according to the Thibodaux Police Department.

Officers responding to a shooting around 9:23 a.m. in the 1700 block of Midland Drive found Kai D. Williams attempting to burn the woman's body, the department announced in a news release. She had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.

"This is an unfortunate tragedy," Thibodeaux Police Chief Bryan Zeringue stated in the release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families."

Williams was taken into custody without incident. The woman, whose identity remains withheld pending notification of next of kin, later died at a New Orleans hospital.

Midland Drive between Plantation Road and Bobby Street was taped off and closed to traffic on Friday while authorities investigated the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
