Louisiana surpassed another record-breaking year for foster care adoptions, The Advocate reported.

The newspaper reports 548 families across Louisiana adopted 771 foster children from Oct. 1, 2016, through Sept. 30, making fiscal year 2017 record-setting for foster care adoptions — surpassing even last year, which had previously been record-breaking, according to the Department of Children and Family Services.

DCFS Secretary Marketa Walters said their unprecedented success finalizing adoptions this past year came from an internal push to find "forever homes" for older youth, sibling groups and children in the custody of relatives but not officially adopted.

While only 12 more families completed adoptions from foster care in fiscal year 2017 compared to the prior year, 35 more children were taken in because more families adopted two or three, even five, children, many of whom were siblings.
