New Iberia has a new police chief

Tuesday at a city council meeting in New Iberia, Todd D'Albor is now the new police chief in the city. The council voted unanimously to make D'Albor the new chief. He will begin his term in office December 1, 2017. 

The city of New Iberia has seen at least seven shootings over the last week, including one that happened an hour before Tuesday nights meeting. 

D'Albor and the community are ready to work together to end the violence in the in the community. 

"This community doesn't owe its police officers trust, the police officers need to earn that trust," D'Albor said. 

While the council voted unanimously to select D'Albor as the city's new police chief, some council members still expressed concerns. 

Council member, Sherry Guidry, wants to make sure she is doing what is best for her community members. 

"This is my opportunity on behalf of my constituents to make sure we are putting the right person in place to make the right decisions," Guidry said. 

Residents in the council audience said they agree with D'Ablor's platform, but they want to see the police department actually get work done. 

Long-term community member, Patricia Hypolite, stands behind the new chief and welcomes his platform into the community.

"Just for him to want to come here says something to me, because he is coming in a war zone and he better be ready to fight. I'm ready to back him up in whatever he does, and we have people in this city ready to do that," Hypolite said. 

The new chief said he is ready to take office and bring change to his new community.

"Obviously I am going to be where the community needs me, the department will be extremely visible. Our plan is that we have a department that is going to be towards the concerns of the citizens, and I feel comfortable. its a matter of earning the communities trust," D'Albor said. 

D'Albor also expressed public safety and keeping people safe and not afraid to come out of their homes is paramount, and that is what he plans to happen.

D'Albor will begin his term in office December 1, 2017.
