Voters in Iberia Parish have voted against a proposed $500 million property millage that would have gone toward helping to fund flood protection and a levee system.

Seventy-three percent of voters decided against the millage, leaving 27 percent in favor.

KATC reached out to Iberia Parish President Larry Richard for his reaction.

"My reaction was that of any election—the citizens of Iberia Parish voted and their voices were heard.

I do believe that Iberia Parish is highly susceptible to the devastating effects of storm surges and coastal flooding.

As for Iberia Parish Government, we will continue with our aggressive efforts to clear and clean strategic channels and canals throughout the Parish. Much drainage work has been accomplished thus far through the hard work of the Iberia Parish Public Works Department and the support of the Iberia Parish Council. We will continue seeking the advice and assistance of engineers and others having expertise in drainage and hydrology as we plan for future drainage projects. These projects are being planned and prioritized in order to obtain maximum benefits."
