Buddy Benches being installed in Lafayette

Posted: Updated:

A dozen elementary schools are getting "Buddy Benches" in Lafayette.

The first bench was installed today at J. Wallace James Elementary.

The program began with a second grader and his family who moved from the United States to Germany. The school the child attended had a Buddy Bench, which basically offers a place for a child to sit if he is feeling lonely or wants a playmate. Sitting on the bench is a signal to other children to come to talk or offer to play. Each school will be given the task of selecting the perfect location to implement the bench into their play areas so that they can implement the program, an LPSS spokesman said.

These are the schools which will get the benches:

  • J Wallace James Elementary
  • Truman Early Childhood Learning Center
  • Alice Boucher Elementary
  • J. W. Faulk Elementary
  • Evangeline Elementary
  • Live Oak Elementary
  • Myrtle Place Elementary
  • S. J. Montgomery Elementary
  • Prairie Elementary
  • Woodvale Elementary
  • Broadmoor Elementary
  • Plantation Elementary
