An Acadiana family needs help in buying a wheelchair accessible van.

Nika was born in Haiti with serious medical issues: hydranencephaly and hydrocephalus. One of the defects caused her head to fill with spinal fluid. The other caused the brain tissue that did develop before she was born to be absorbed by the rest of her body. Because of that, Nika only has a a brain stem, cerebellum and a little bit of her thalamus, but is lacking her cerebral cortex.

Her legal guardian, Sarah Conque, is from Carencro and met Nika while on a mission trip to Haiti.

Recently, the family created a crowd-funding campaign to help pay for a van that will allow Conque to safely transport Nika.

Here are the details, from Little Warrior Nika's Facebook page:

"I knew this time would come eventually and now it's finally here.. Nika has outgrown her rear facing carseat and we are out of options to transport her safely since she can't sit straight up while forward facing due to her head size, lack of consistent head control, breathing/airway issues, and other factors.
So, after much research, we've discovered that our safest and only option is to get a wheelchair accessible van. Guys, they are not cheap. WE NEED YOUR HELP!" the post reads. "Thank you all for the love you show us daily. Nika would not be where she is today without your encouragement, prayers, and support. Thank you for considering helping us with this big need."
