Downtown Alive! honors veterans

LAFAYETTE, La. -

Veterans at Friday night's Downtown Alive! were honored for their service and dedication.

This weeks organizer, Sarah Gauthier Roy, wanted to honor veterans while having children involved as well.

"I decided to join veterans in by having people nominate a living veteran to be the grand marshal of lantern parade and walk with the children," Gauthier Roy said.

Veterans were nominated by family and friends and honored before the live music began.

One 90-year-old veteran, George Lewis Herman, Jr. was grateful to be honored in Lafayette on Friday.

"I think it was wonderful. I am very happy," Herman said.

Children also played a major role in Friday night's festivities. Some made lanterns at home, and other came to the parade to make lanterns with their family.

The children used the lanterns to walk in the parade and honor lanterns.

"I think keeping the conversations going is important, so kids know someone fought for them," Roy said.
