Mayor Joseph's visitation underway

Posted: Updated:
OPELOUSAS, La. -

A visitation is underway until 6 p.m. today for Opelousas' first black mayor, John W. Joseph.

Joseph died last week at the age of 84. The visitation is happening now at Opelousas City Hall.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 11 at Progressive Baptist Church in Lafayette.

Joseph was elected in 1984 and made history, becoming Opelousas' first black mayor. Serving the city for 7 years, Joseph made improvements by creating the city's first government committees and transferring the city's electric to Cleco. Joseph also was instrumental in founding the City of Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center.
