State Police have completed their investigation into the shooting death of Dejuan Guillory, and their findings are now in the hands of the Evangeline Parish District Attorney.

In July, an Evangeline Parish Sheriff's deputy shot and killed the Mamou man. State Police have been investigating since that time, and turned over their investigation to the DA on Friday, a spokesman said. We spoke with the DA today, who told us he is reviewing the case now.

Here's the full text of the statement released by the DA today:

The State Police investigation into the shooting death of Dejuan Guillory by an Evangeline Parish Deputy has been completed and the investigative file was recently delivered to District Attorney Trent Brignac this past Friday, November 3, 2017.

Brignac indicated he and his staff immediately began reviewing the documentation.  Everybody involved in the incident as well as the public deserve thorough and well-considered decisions as it applies to the ultimate outcome.

Although the review of a voluminous four-month investigation is a significant undertaking that will require considerable time and man hours, every effort is being made to prioritize this matter in hopes that the families involved and the public as well will come to know the details of what happened that morning as well as the steps and procedures involved in moving forward.

We would like to thank all involved for their patience and understanding over these past four months while this investigation was ongoing.  State Police had many other high priority cases in addition to this one and did not want to rush the investigation at the risk of compromising the quality and thoroughness of their work.

This office is not in a position to ethically give additional information to the public at this time as it may prejudice those that ultimately have to make decisions regarding this matter.  However, we will reach out to the families involved in an effort to give them more insight as to what happened during this tragic situation.

Guillory's family and their lawyer claim that the shooting was improper. His mother, a former police officer named Monica Fontenot, says her son was murdered.

Affidavits filed in the case by State Police indicate that the deputy stopped Guillory and his girlfriend, Dequince Brown, during an investigation into a stolen ATV. The deputy said in a statement that Guillory punched him so hard he "saw stars" and then struggled when the deputy tried to cuff him. He said Brown jumped on his back and bit him. State Police also filed an affidavit indicate that Brown allegedly admitted choking and biting the deputy.
