Pet adoption fees waived for veterans

Posted: Updated:

The Lafayette Parish Animal Shelter & Care Center (LASCC) will host a Veterans Day edition of its “Second Chance Saturday” adoption event on November 11 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.  All military veterans interested in adopting a pet are invited to the shelter to take advantage of free pet adoption for veterans.

Every adoptable animal from the shelter is already neutered or spayed, vaccinated, heartworm tested and microchipped, and at absolutely no cost to veterans.

In August, Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux signed into law an ordinance which waives all costs of adoptions for military veterans with IDs and senior citizens over 65 years of age. Additionally, the ordinance significantly reduces the general public’s fees to $35 for dogs and puppies and $25 for cats and kittens.

Held on the second Saturday of each month, Second Chance Saturday adoption events give animals at the shelter a second chance of being adopted into a loving home. Saturday events are more convenient by working around most people’s weekday work schedules. Weekend adoptions also allow the pet and their new owner the remainder of the weekend to become acquainted with each other’s needs and routines before resuming the regular week on Monday.

LASCC, located at 613 W. Pont Des Mouton Rd. in Lafayette, will be open from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. for those interested in adopting dogs, puppies, cats or kittens housed at the shelter. LASCC will not accept animals for intake on this day. Regular adoption hours are from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Each adopted animal from LASCC is spayed/neutered, heartworm tested/vaccinated and microchipped. Valued between $200 and $500, these pet health services are included in the low adoption fees of $35 for dogs and puppies and $25 for cats and kittens, while fees are waived altogether for veterans and seniors. Cash, Visa, MasterCard and Discover payments are accepted at LASCC.

Pet ownership requires planning and adoption gift certificates are the best option for individuals interested in gifting a shelter pet. Giving an LASCC “Gift Fur-tificate” ensures that the recipient is ready to welcome their new pet and allows them to select a puppy, kitten, dog or cat of their choice. LSACC adoption gift certificates are available for purchase at the shelter and cover costs associated with regular adoption, including spaying/neutering, vaccinations, heartworm testing and microchips.

The new no-or low-adoption fees, combined with Saturday adoptions, have significantly increased adoption rates and reduced euthanasia, both of which create a positive momentum towards the shelter’s goal of ultimately achieving no-kill status.
