At least two people have been hospitalized after a fire broke out on on a Shell platform in the Gulf of Mexico early Wednesday morning. The fire occurred on the Enchilada platform about 112 miles south of Vermilion Bay.

The fire "has been reduced to a small flame coming out of a pipe in the platform," according to a U.S. Coast Guard news release, and a light sheen has been reported north of the Enchilada. The Coast Guard received an initial report of the fire at 1:20 a.m.

Shell said in a statement the fire resulted from an "operational incident," and that it had identified the source. Both the Enchilada and Salsa platforms were safely shut down, according to Shell, which added that it will investigate the cause.
