Cool Schools: Opelousas High School

Posted: Updated:

Today's COOL SCHOOL is Opelousas High School. The Opelousas High School Spanish Club participated in the Latin Music Festival. They performed two Latin dances: La Pollera Colora, a traditional Colombian Cumbia, and a modern dance typical of the Latin American regions to the song La Gozadera by Gente de Zona featuring Marc Anthony.

The Cumbia developed along Colombia's coast and later spread into the interior of the country. By the 1950s, its rhythms had diffused throughout Colombia's neighbor states.

Originally a working-class populist music, it was looked down on by elites, but as the music penetrated class association, it became a shared music in every sector of society. At the event, the students met several people and learned a great deal about Latin culture. They even got to meet Lafayette Parish President, Joel Robideaux.

If you have a COOL SCHOOL let us know. Send Dave Baker an email to weather@katctv.com. Put COOL SCHOOLS in the subject line. Include a picture and a short story about why your school is COOL. We do COOL SCHOOLS every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The COOL SCHOOLS segment is already booked through Thanksgiving, and will be booked through Christmas very soon. Please try to avoid time sensitive events, especially holiday programs or ceremonies. Submissions may not run until early next year, well after the holidays are over. Thanks!
