Ninth graders in the Episcopal School of Acadiana’s Physical Science classes participated in the 16th annual Refrigerator Box Regatta on Monday at the Spanish Lake boat launch.
The goal of the project is to build a boat of corrugated cardboard large enough to carry one passenger, to predict the draft when loaded according to Archimedes’ Principle, and to successfully paddle the boat through a course at Spanish Lake. Physical Science is a course taken by ESA ninth graders, and taught by teachers Bullard Jones and Renee Casbon. Students work in groups of two or three to complete the project using a cardboard appliance box, caulk, duct tape, plastic ties and paint.
This is always a fun day at Spanish Lake as students put their designs to the test, teachers say.
