Records Fall at Swimming's Top 24

Posted: Updated:

The final High School swim meet for the Southwest Louisiana Swim League was held Saturday in Lafayette. The Top 24 Championships featured 32 teams from all five divisions with the fastest swimmers competing for League Champion. This year Barbe High School walked away with the combined girls and boys team trophy scoring 588 points over Lafayette High School's 532.5 with Ascension Episcopal School finishing third with 386 points. For the boys teams, Lafayette High School edged out St. Louis Catholic High School with Barbe boys finishing third. On the girl's side, Barbe High School dominated with Ascension finishing second and St. Thomas More girls coming in third place.

A very exciting meet with many swimmers finishing the regular season with personal best times. Out of 22 individual and relay events, nine league records fell!

Ascension Episcopal School junior Jillian Barczyk breaking two of her own records including the 200 Freestyle Record with a time of 1:54.65 and the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:01.04. Ascension freshman Jack Aldridge took the 200 Freestyle record with a time of 1:47.62 breaking a one year old record. David Thibodeaux STEM Academy's Griffen Foreman broke the boys 100 Butterfly record with a time of 52.88. Lafayette High School senior Miguel Vasquez broke his own 100 Freestyle record that he set just two days before with a time of 48.00. Later, Vasquez was the lead swimmer for the 200 Free Relay. His split of 21.93 demolished the old 50 Free record of 22.62 set by ESA's Silas DeJean back in 2012. Later in the meet Vasquez took a nine year old record for the 100 Backstroke with a time of 53.90. Saint Louis High School boys broke their own records (again) in the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays.

Several swimmers that placed in the top three in each individual event made the Southwest Louisiana Swim League All Star Team. The Louisiana High School State Championships will be held in Sulphur in two weeks. Smaller schools in Division III & IV will swim preliminary events Wednesday, November 15th with finals on Thursday, November 16th. Larger schools from throughout the state in Division I & II will swim prelims on Friday, November 17th and the finals Saturday, November 18th.
