Native American Heritage Month kicks off at Acadian Cultural Center

Posted: Updated:
LAFAYETTE, La. -

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the Acadian Cultural Center of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve will highlight the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana during November.

The Chitimacha are the only Louisiana tribe still living on their ancestral homelands.

Yesterday, two Chitimacha were at the center, demonstrating and discussing their crafts. Chitimacha basket weaver Neka Mire discussed both basket weaving and beadwork, and Sarah Guillory discussed beadwork, regalia, and Pow Wow participation.

Throughout the month, there will be a Chitimacha basket collection on display, an exhibit depicting Chitimacha history, and films available upon request.

The center and all activities are free and open to the public. The Acadian Cultural Center of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is located at 501 Fisher Road in Lafayette.
