UPDATE: A DeRidder man, who was arrested for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile yesterday, is now facing a first-degree murder charge after the 2-year-old boy passed away this morning.

Forrest Edward Menard, 22, was booked into the Beauregard Parish jail after DeRidder police discovered an unresponsive two-year-old with injuries in his care, Chief John Gott said.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel responded to the DeRidder home at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and found the child, suffering from visible injuries to his head, neck and body, according to the chief.

The child was taken to a local hospital where it was determined he had suffered severe head trauma, the chief said. The child was then flown to another hospital.

Police were notified at 10:30 a.m. this morning that the child succumbed to his injuries.

Menard remains in jail with no bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.
