LPSO: Lafayette man arrested with more than $34,000 in currency, narcotics

A Lafayette man has been arrested after a traffic stop Thursday night resulted in what deputies say is $34,700 in narcotics and contraband. 

Officials with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office report that on November 2, 2017, the Lafayette Metro Narcotics task force "Street Team" made a traffic stop near Louisiana Avenue and Carmel Drive. During the stop, agents discovered approximately $34,791 in currency and narcotics. 

The driver of the vehicle identified as 28-year-old Kaland Joseph Dean of Lafayette was arrested. Dean was found to allegedly be in possession of the following items at the time of the traffic stop. 

  • $23,621.00 in currency.
  • 48 Xanax tablets valued at $480.00
  • 26.6 grams of Heroin valued at $10,640.00
  • 1.5 grams of Marijuana valued at $30.00
  • 1 Doxycycline 100-milligram tablet valued at $10.00
  • 1 Meloxicam 15 milligram tablet valued at $10.00
  • Glock 27 .40 caliber pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition

Dean has been charged with the following:

  • Possession with the intent to distribute Schedule I Heroin.
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • Possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous
  • substance.
  • Possession of Marijuana (felony, 4th offense).
  • Possession of schedule IV (Xanax).
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
  • Possession of a legend drug.
  • Monies derived from drug transactions.

The sheriff's office says that the "street team" is a new addition to the task force that was formed on July 1, 2017. They are the patrol branch of the narcotics unit.
