Uncle arrested in Arnaudville child's fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:
ARNAUDVILLE, La. -

An Arnaudville man is facing charges in the fatal shooting of his three-year-old nephew, who police said accidentally shot himself with his uncle's handgun.

Dracolby Journet, 28, was booked on Friday on counts of illegal possession of a stolen firearm and obstruction of justice in the shooting, which authorities are investigating as an accident.

In an interview with police documented in his arrest affidavit, Journet told police he went to the bathroom, heard a "loud pop" and returned to find his nephew had shot himself.

"Dracolby was visibly shaken, crying hysterically, and constantly asking how (his nephew) was throughout the interview," the police wrote in the document.

Journet told police he stored the gun in an unlocked box beside his bed, which is where he found the toddler suffering from a gun shot wound in his head. He also told police he put the gun in the back-yard after the shooting.

Journet told police a friend gave him the gun two months ago. Someone in 2012 had reported the firearm — a High Point 9mm semi-automatic handgun — as stolen from Church Point, according to the affidavit.

While investigating the scene, where a 5-year-old girl also was present, the detective found a toy gun in the living room. The toddler had been playing with the toy gun earlier that night, his grandfather told police.

Deputies responded to shooting around 7:20 p.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of Kennedy Drive . The toddler, whose name has not been released, died at a hospital around 9:47 p.m.

Journet was booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail. His bond has been set at $7,000.
